turkey.jpg   WV Susan G Komen Giving Thanks for you and the support from our communities.  November 2014 Review

Reminder Dec 2nd is  Giving Tuesday donate

It was a very busy October and November. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was a great opportunity to not only share great information but do some serious fundraising to put back into our communities around the state. We know it takes great funding to make gap filling programs flourish.

Our Community Grant Program funded many projects to serve the general public as well as providers. Awareness is so much more than you might imagine. It is about making sure everyone knows that there is funding available regardless of your insurance or deductibles. It is making sure that the more we know, the more everyone knows. We still find that a majority of men & women we talk to do not know that 80% of all breast cancers diagnosed have no family connection. That only around 20% are inherited genetic abnormality. That metastatic breast cancer (the recurrence) has patterns we are starting to understand to provide better treatment options. It is bringing providers up to date on what is going on in Clinical Trials, Patient Navigation, and then sharing among facilities the wonderful work our Grantees are doing. Breast Cancer Awareness Month allows us to share how to understand risk factors and which ones you can do something about. It gets us into the middle and high schools to promote healthy diet and lifestyle choices that benefit for a lifetime. BCAM is so much more important than the pretty pink we celebrate it with. It is also a time to reflect on those we have lost and those we are celebrating their survivorship. It allows us to explore the quality of life that our survivors can expect. So when someone says something like "why put money into awareness, everyone knows there is breast cancer"...just tell them there is a lot more to awareness and it is still important!

We KICKED OFF BCAM with Bert Wolfe Ford test drive event. It started a Team by a Sponsor with a discount to register early. It was also a fun day and month -so THANK YOU Bert Wolfe and your fabulous Team.

*Individuals submitting a $ 30.00 registration fee to William Hensley Fishing.com or Faces of Fighters.com can submit a picture of a family member or friend to be used to make up the tribute wrap for the boat and truck.  Each individual submitting a $ 30.00 registration fee will be able to print a certificate of appreciation for that years tribute wrap from our web page.  Twenty percent of the net proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen West Virginia.

As always we need YOU. That's right without our volunteers so very many things would just never happen.  This Tuesday and Thursday Dec 2nd and 4th we could use help in the office. Just email or call Donna and let her know 304-556-4808 or executivedirector@komenwv.org

We know our numbers are still coming in from the fall activities but we know with approx 70 different activities 13,000 received some form of Breast Cancer Awareness Education during BCAM- so YEAH for WV Komen for making an impact on knowledge.
