Monday Morning Coffee gets a health perk

4 new benefits of coffee...
Here are a few reasons to feel good about drinking coffee. Go ahead, brew and pour. Previous studies have shown coffee can lower your risk of diabetes, liver cancer, Alzheimer’s and skin cancer. Here are 4 new reasons to drink your coffee and feel good about it.—Emily Rogan

1. Boost your blood flow

A new study presented at an American Heart Association meeting found that young adults who drank a cup of caffeinated coffee boosted their blood flow compared to when they drank decaf. Researchers looked at blood flow in the finger, which indicates how well the body’s smallest blood vessels—particularly, the inner linings of these blood vessels—work. Studies have linked poor function of this lining to an increased risk of heart attack, heart disease and stroke. The researchers suspect that caffeine opens up blood vessels and has anti-inflammatory properties.

2. Improve your outlook

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health reviewed data from three large studies–of nearly 200,000 adults—and found that the risk of suicide for adults who drank two to four cups of caffeinated coffee per day was half that of those who drank decaf or little or no coffee. The researchers believe that caffeine boosts neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline—acting as a mild antidepressant.

3. Cut your risk of oral cancer

People who drank at least one cup of caffeinated coffee a day cut their risk of developing throat or mouth cancer compared to those who drank none. The risk was 20 percent lower among those who drank one to two cups daily and 50 percent less if they drank more than four cups, states a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The authors say more research needs to be done to understand why.

4. Sustainable solution to single-cup coffee makers

If you love the convenience of single-serving coffee makers but hate how those plastic cups are piling up in landfills, three brands now offer a biodegradable, single-cup solution: Canterbury Coffee’s OneCoffee, San Francisco Bay’s OneCup and Organic Coffee Company’s OneCup.

Educating women about teh importance of early detection is also an important component of this program. These goals will be met by offering educational programs to both providers and the community as well as planning community events where mammography will be offered on the day of events. By collaborating with community partners, multiple sources for funding will be utilized to maximize grant funds in order to help as many women as possible. Members o the Breast Cancer Leadership Committee will attend community events as well to increase awareness and mammograms can be scheduled at these events.

  • Wheeling Hospital

Project Name: Eliminating the Cost of the Gasoline Barrier

Project Contact: Debbie Radosevich

About: Wheeling Hospital established a Cancer Navigation Program in October 2012. The navigator's role includes but is not limited to: assisting newly diagnosed patients in maneuvering the complex healthcare system, providing a single contact that crosses over disciplines and enhances communication to all team members and patients, evaluating and reporting anxiety/depression to the appropriate provider(s), and identifying and providing resources to assist in eliminating barriers to care. Our Patient Navigator has identified the cost of gasoline as a sincere barrier to treatment for some of our patients. Funds are being requested to provide financial assistance in the form of gasoline cards for individuals needing to make multiple trips to Wheeling Hospital for treatments who live beyond the eligible radius to utilize our transport van.

Project Name: Breast Health Basics

Project Contact: Jayme Nardo

About: Breast Health Basics is an educational program conducted 7 times annually by Wheeling Hospital's Breast Patient Navigator. The curriculum outlines the basics of a breast self-exam, the role of clinical breast exams, healthy lifestyles to promote breast health, the importance of regular mammograms for women over 40 years of age, elimination of barriers and how early detection can save lives. A focus of Breast Health Basics is to reach underinsured and/or uninsured women over age 40 who do not obtain routine mammography screening. Women are then directed to the appropriate resource for obtaining mammograms at no cost. Target area: the northern panhandle of WV. This program has additional partner programs (Bosom Buddies, a Hand Therapy Department specializing in upper extremity rehab) that will benefit from the WV Affiliate of Susan G. Komen assisting us in expanding our Breast Health Basics program. It will allow us to continue in our efforts to reach and provide care for the underinsured and uninsured in our service area with a specific focus of participation from residents in Ohio and Hancock counties.

  • West Virginia Health Right

Project Name: Breast Health Care for the Impoverished Medically

Project Contact: Angie Settle

About: WV Health Right, the State's oldest and largest free clinic, provides comprehensive primary and specialty healthcare at no charge to 14,193 impoverished medically underserved women from 34 south central WV counties. Through this project, the clinic will provide breast health education, screening and treatment services to women between the ages 40 and 49, who are at greatest risk of poor breast health: those with very low incomes, low educational levels, no health insurance or those women who may be eligible for Expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) but are unable to access a medical home. Further, in light of the implementation of the ACA, we will now serve those who are uninsured whose household incomes are 250% of the Federal Poverty Level. Our project will provide breast health education to an additional 200 women and provide free appropriate care and treatment to an additional 500 women between the ages of 40 and 49 who are ineligible for the WVBCCSP services.

  • WVU Foundation Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center

Project Name: Bonnie's Bus: Providing Mammograms & Education

Project Contact: Sara Jane Gainor

About: Bonnie's Bus does not turn away any woman over the age of 40 because she is not insured or cannot pay for her mammogram. Grant funds are used to fund services for these women. We make every effort to check eligibility for WVBCCSP and to refer to that program, but there are many women who come to the Bus who do no qualify or are not able to enroll it hose programs for a variety for reasons... We are requesting funding for up to 200 mammograms (at approximately $130-140 per mammogram) for uninsured women age 40 and over who are not eligible for or do not have access to WVBCCSP. In addition, we are requesting funding to cover diagnostic procedures at Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center for up to $2500.Alhtought WVBCCSP covers most uninsured women for follow-up diagnostic tests, occasionally tehre are women who do not qualify for one reason ro another; we would like to fill this gap with our Komen project.
